IHRC Tasks Police on Proper Documentation and Compensation for Officers and Men

It was pomp and pageantry in Abuja on December 10, 2021, as the International Human Rights Commission in Nigeria (IHRC) awards exemplary Nigerians in commemoration of the International Day for Human Rights 2021, on 10th December 2021. While commends the awardees In his goodwill message at the event, the Nigeria Country Head, and Commissioner for West African Countries, (IHRC), Amb Dr Friday Sani, extols the awardees as he calls on the Nigerian Police authority, in particular, to assist THRC in Nigerian access to documentation vis-a-vis provide the body with a desk at the Force Headquarters. This, he said will enhance access to vital information in the interest of both parties for proper monitoring of the men of the force, who according to him, have paid the supreme price with their lives in the cause of serving their fatherland. On behalf of the global body under the leadership of the World Secretary-General and Chairman of IHRC, Prof Sir, Rafal Marcin Wasik, Amb Sani however directed the strong message at the AIG Hafiz Inuwa, the Nigerian Police Force Secretary, who also bagged the prestigious Police Hero Award 2021 at the event, thus:
“One of the areas the IHRE is interested in is for you to use your good office to create a desk for use at the Force Headquarters.
“This will enable us easy access to information, and to collate the report of your men who go out there to protect the citizens and in the process, some get injured and become incapacitated while some die, yet they not properly documented or compensated.
“If the men that are protecting people do not have the assurances of their own rights protected, it becomes difficult for them defend the right of others.
“On this note, it is the desire of the International Human Rights Commission, to seek your indulgence as the Administrative Officer of the Nigerian Police Force to help create a desk for the THRC at the Force Headquarters. This will enable us to collate genuine report of your men who have done well and deserve honour and merits along side with collation of definite data of men who sustained injuries or died in the course of duty.” IHRC demands. Meanwhile, the IHRC’s prestigious Human Rights Awards 2021, in its categories honoured 16 exemplary Nigerians, who have one way or the other championed the cause of justice in promoting human rights agenda in their various capacities. Mohammed CFR GCON; also the Minister of Justice was awarded the Most Courageous Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Mallami. Best Human Rights Legislator of the Year 2021 awarded to Hon. Onofiok Luke. Others are Best Chief Judge of the Year, given to the Hon Chief Judge of Lagos State High Court of Justice, received in person at the occasion by Hon. Justice Kazeem Alogba, Best Human Rights Television and Radio Presenter in Nigeria, received by Dr Amaechi Anakwe of AIT, Abuja, among other thriller awards.
